The Beauty in Looking Closer
One of the things I love most about being an artist is noticing the little details that are so easily overlooked. The softness of a feather, the subtle shifts in colour, the expression in an animal's eyes and all those wonderful characteristics that give each creature its own personality.
This collection was inspired by the incredible wildlife found in and around Sanctuary Cove. While many of these species can be found throughout Australia, it was here, surrounded by the waterways, native vegetation and wildlife of the region, that these paintings came to life.
Much of the collection was painted on the back deck of our family boat while we were living at Sanctuary Cove over the Easter school holidays. I'd spend my days with a paintbrush in hand, often looking up to see the very birds and wildlife I was trying to capture. There's something rather special about painting an animal while watching it go about its day in its natural surroundings, and I think that experience brought a whole new level of appreciation to the process.
Rather than filling each painting with a detailed background, I wanted the wildlife itself to be the focus, allowing the colours, textures and individual personalities of each species to tell their own story.
My hope is that these artworks encourage you to look a little closer at the world around you, to notice something you might otherwise have walked straight past and appreciate the extraordinary wildlife living right here in our own backyards.
